Zyons homers twice as Bryant completes weekend sweep with 17-4 victory

ALBANY, N.Y. – Zac Zyons homered twice and drove in five runs as the Bryant baseball team completed a series sweep with a 17-4 victory over UAlbany in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at Varsity Field.
 
The Bulldogs improve to 22-16-1 overall and 10-5 in America East play with their 11th win in 12 games. Bryant moves into first place in the America East with its third-straight series victory.
 
After a pair of tight victories in the first two games of the series, the Black and Gold homered six times on its way to a season-high 17 runs. Zyons finished 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI, while Gavin Noriega (2-5, HR, 2RBI, 3R), Drew Wyers (HR, 3RBI), Pat D'Amico (2-4, HR, 2RBI, 2R) and Gavin Greger (2-5, HR, 2R) all homered.

Key Moments
  • UAlbany pulled to within 5-3 in the fifth but the Bulldogs responded with a seven-run sixth to put the game away.
How it Happened
  • Wyers plated the first run of the game with a sac fly in the top of the first.
  • Bryant went on to plate three runs in the third to make it 4-0. Charlie Saul reached on an error and raced to third as Zyons beat out a bunt single. Noriega followed with fielder's choice and D'Amico made it 4-0 with a two-run home run to left field.
  • UAlbany plated a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. The Great Danes would load the bases but Mark Scamardella induced a ground out to end the rally.
  • Zyons' first home run of the game made it 5-1 in the top of the fifth.
  • UAlbany plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with back-to-back two-out doubles.
  • The Black and Gold responded by sending 10 men to the plate and scoring seven runs in the sixth. Matt D'Amato's bunt single turned into a run as the throw went wide at first base. Brandyn Durand then hit a soft chopper to first and Greger beat the throw home to plate the second run. Jacob Gaudreau's safety squeeze made it 8-3. Zyons added another safety squeeze before Noriega's drive to right was dropped to score a run. Wyers capped the big inning with a two-run home run to dead center.
  • Bryant put the game away with five runs in the top of the seventh. Greger led off the inning with a home run to right field, while Zyons hit a three-run home run. Noriega made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to left center to make it 17-4.
